You probably need to format the disk and/or assign it a drive letter. Both of these can be done through the computer management console. Right-click on Computer and select Manage, then look for disk management. This should show you a list of all your hard drives including the external disk. If it is unformatted, it will say so next to the device in the list of drives. Otherwise, all you need to do is right-click on drive (should be second or third on the list) and select Assign Drive Letter. Windows is supposed to do this automatically, but sometimes it doesn't. Without a drive letter assigned, the drive will not show up in Computer/My Computer.
