I bought a LiteOn 48x24x48 burner recently. For some reason it is not working as fast as it should be working. I have burned about 12 CDs. My CDs are 40x, and I have burned then at 32x. The problem is that my burner burns them at about 20x (according to CloneCd, and Nero). The buffer is full and ok during the burn process. I can't figure out why this is burning the CDs so slow. Any help would be greatly appriciated.
Some info on how I have set it up: I have the burner as slave, connected to the secondary IDE. (I've connected it to the middle connector on the IDE cable, isn't this right?) Should I connect it on the master ide cable along with my hard drive?
Also something very odd that I notice is that when I burn a CD my computer slows down so much that I can hardly do ANYTHING with windows. I know I dont have a fast pc, but burning a cd on a 800MHz pc shouldn't slow down the comp too much???Thanks in advance

Are you sure the CD-RW isn't running in programmable input/output mode? Make sure it is running in at least Mutliword DMA mode 2.

DMA is direct memory access. Check it by going into the control pannel, system, hardware tab, devices. Then under the IDE controllers double click on secondary IDE channel and advanceed settings. If the CD-RW is master it will be device 0. Post back with the current transfer mode.

Aaaah quite disappointed....
looked at my cdrom "manual" which is ONE page, and it says "make sure DMA mode is enabled" and it doesnt say how to do it, hehe :)Ok, it was on PIO for both my burner and my DVD, I changed them both to "DMA if available" and rebooted, but it didnt do any good. It says current transfer mode is PIO, both for my burner and my dvd player....
if it is mentioned in my burner's manual, then it sure does support DMA... what should I do?

Hmmmmmmm. What transfer rate is the hard drive working in?
If that is working in any UDMA mode then the motherboard obviously supports UDMA on both channels.
Try this if the hard drive is working in UDMA. Right click on the secondary IDE channel in the device manager and goto uninstall. Reboot the box. Windows will re-install the drive for it on it's own. Once it's done this check the UDMA mode of the CD-RW again.

aaah stupid windows! worked!
I uninstalled the secondary ide and now they're both on dma :) thanks manone question though...
should I hook my burner as slave or master? and also if it is slave, should it be on the middle connector of the ide cable?
thanks alot for your help!

It won't make a whole lot of difference whether the burner is on slave or master. If the CD-ROM drive isn't doing anything at the same time as the burner, exactly the same resources will go into burning a CD as if it was master and the CD-ROM was slave.
Seeing as it's already on slave I would just let it be. Perhaps if your upgrading something else you could change the jumper on the burner at the same time? If it's set to slave it should be on the middle connector on the IDE cable yeah.
I have had my burner set to slave for about a year and I don't even have a device on secondary master.....I'm just too lazy to change it.
If you have anymore problems just post a thread on here and we'll help you out.
Finally a very happy new year to you!!

oh yeah, I almost forgot!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!Thanks again for the help, it's working great now! :) :) :)
