Comment: I have a Dell Inspiron 600M. In the last 6 months I have had to replace the Hard drive 3 times. Could something with my computer be causing the problem, or am I just getting bad drives?

Reply: (edit)Either answer might be correct. Things that can do in a HD. Heat, incorrect voltage, voltage surges, running the bus out of specs. Are you sure the drives were actually defective?

Reply: (edit)Yes I have ran the the diagnostics, and they have proved to be bad, so where do I go from here? Should I see if I can send it back to Dell even though the warranty has ended?

Reply: (edit)I haven't made any changes to anything, except for putting in 3 new drives. Where would I check to see if busses are at spec?

Reply: (edit)The drives have been lasting a shorter time for each one, the first about 6 months, then 3 months and then 30 days on the last one.

Reply: (edit)You can check most everything in your machine using Everest Home edition. You may want to check the voltage going to the HDs. Everest will show the CPU bus speed. If it is what it should be (100/133/200 depending on processor) then the AGP will also be OK. In Everest look under Computer> sensor to see the voltages. The Harddrives use 5v. Find Everest here: http://www.lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=1&lang=en&pageid=1

Reply: (edit)Ok, this is WAAAAY freaky, because it sounds like the EXACT same thing is happenning on my system. Inspiron 4100 (2001 machine) Warranty expired October 2004 OEM Hard drive failed November 2004 Bought new Seagate Momentum drive November 2004 Failed April 2005 Seagate warranty replaced drive May 2005 Failed June 2005 3 drive failures in 7 months. Each time a shorter time period. Interesting the Seagate diagnostics "SeaTools" locks up on my system. Seagate is baffled and suggests bad memory in my Dell laptop. How heck would I know? The Dell Diagnostics check out the memory with no problem. Geez I just don't want to go through ANOTHER hard drive setup only to have it fail again. I wish something would just say the memory was bad. I will check the busses and voltage too.
