I am trying to fix a computer for someone that has no sound. It's a HP 512w. In device manager it has ?! Multimedia audio controller.

There is no recovery partition.
There are no restore disc's.
The sound is enabled in bios.
I tried HP's website but cannot find any audio drivers.

Any other suggestions as how to get sound working again?

Thanx.

Try removing the device from within device manager and reboot. XP may be able to install a driver.

Hi,

If the above doesn't work you may want to try what the HP website suggests.

HP indicates that the sound chip is an AC97 Audio. They have a statement on their troubleshooting page that reads:

"NOTE: If your HP or Compaq is using Realtek AC97' or Realtek HD audio (codecs), it has been found that installing the latest audio drivers from Realtek's website (in English) can resolve a variety of issues, including no audio."

The links lead to this site:

Good luck!

...if it ain't broke, then you ain't having fun...

Well I fired up cpu-z and found the motherboard manufacturer. Also the chipset. I did a google search and somehow came to emachines website and downloaded the AC'97 driver from them and it works fine now lol.
