hi,
i have two problems with my system.

1: i got a combo drive installed on the cpu. previously i had a dvd but it had the problem that it doesn't play dvds.but when i tried the same dvd drive on another cpu it worked all good.then i upgraded to a combo drive but it has the same problem.infact now it doesn't even recognizes a dvd but plays cd perfectly.

2: if i ever try having two hard disks or two dvd drives, my system stucks at startup where it is suppozed to look for installed drives.

i tried changing the motherboard and also the hard disk but it didn't help.could it poosibly because of the power box?like if its not getting enough power!!

Thanx in advance for all your help

re the first message,
1) is this because you have not loaded the codecs for DVD playing on your PC. They are not built into windows. Windows/Windows Media Player can not play DVDs unless the codecs are loaded separately (eg. by installing Power DVD or a codec pack download from the internet (there are free ones out there)
2) most likely due to jumper settings (the jumpers connecting pins on the backs of the drvives)

When installing multiple IDE devices, you have to set the master/slave/cable select jumper on the back of ALL drives to the appropriate setting. If they are set wrong, the system will not boot.

It's generally best not to connect two HDDs or two optical drives to the same IDE cable/channel. They will *usually* work when configured that way, but data transfers will not be optimal. And for whatever reason, sometimes certain devices simply dont like being paired up together.

If you have 2 HDDs & 2 optical drives, either of these configs should be used:

primary master = HDD1 w/OS
primary slave = optical drive 1
2ndary master = HDD2
2ndary slave = optical drive 2

OR.........

primary master = HDD1 w/OS
primary slave = optical drive 1
2ndary master = optical drive 2
2ndary slave = HDD2

Also, some HDDs have jumper settings for master (single) or master (with slave). The settings are usually (but not always) printed on the HDD label.
