i've had a sandisk m230 mp3 player for close to a year now and i've always just opened it up from My Computer and used windows explorer to drag and drop files into it.

what i would like to know is why a couple days ago i plugged it in to drop some new songs into it and it was no longer showing up in the My Computer folder.

the usb is reading the device but now when i plug it in i get the little window saying "mtp media player. what would you like windows to to?" the only choices i am given are to transfer files with windows media player, open with winamp or do nothing. as i recall before it used to also give me the option to open with windows explorer, which is what i perfer. i have no interest in using another program to manage my songs when i can drag and drop them directly, so can anyone help me make it so an icon for my player can reappear in My Computer?

thanx

When I connect my SanDisk M240 I get the popup showing MTP player and the what do I want to do question.

My choices are, as you stated, to synch using WMP but the other choice is "Take no action" which the choice I take.

I then open Windows Explorer and find:
My Computer\SanDisk Sansa m240\Media where I can drag and drop. It does have an icon beside it that resembles an MP3 player.

I got this device a week ago. Windows saw it, recognized it and it installed as expected.

I have other USB devices that show the USB connection icon in the system tray while they are connected. Surprisingly, this device does not even though it makes the bloop, bloop sound when I connect or disconnect it.

So, I am thinking yours may very well be working correctly and perhaps you are only remembering it working differently than it does now.

Do you not see the SanDisk Sansa m240\Media folders under My Computer? (Win+E)
Note: It also shows in Device Manager in the category: Windows Portable Devices as
SanDisk Sansa m240
I would have expected it to show up in the USB Controllers section instead.

Regards,
Bryan

the whole point for me writing in is because it STOPPED showing in my computer. before, when i plugged my player in it used to give me the option to open using windows explorer now it doesnt. i had it set on take no action because i prefer to open my computer and manually open the sandisk icon. but now there is no icon that appears in my computer, at least not in mtp mode. if i set my mp3 player to msc mode then it once again shows up in my computer but i would prefer to have it back like i always had it.

im guessing it might have been a few media player programs that i installed and uninstalled recently, i know its not a registry key because i merged all the back-ups of deleted registry files i had erased lately... so, any ideas?

I was experiencing the same thing and it turned out to be the Mode setting on the device. Mine was set to Play for Sure and when I switched it to Rhapsody mode, it suddenly started showing up in My Computer.
