My new PC (XP MCE) with SATA HD won't boot into windows and i was wondering if i could take my ide HD from my old PC (XP PRO) and put it in the new PC (has ide & sata) and get it to boot so i could try to get the data of the SATA HD. Will the PC boot from the ide HD because it is a different mobo & chipset. Will i need the XP cd because i don't have the XP cd just an 98SE & Vista upgrade CD.I ran the Seagate HD tool several times on the HD and it passed so i think it's my operating system that is messed up. I am just trying to get the data off HD now and will worry about the boot problem later.
The PC has the 1 SATA HD and A DVD burner set as secondary ide master. How would i set this up if it is possible. Thank you

The EULA states one XP one PC, if you took a drive from another PC it would need a repair install and re-activation.

Without an XP CD you are hitting a brick wall.

An SATA to IDE convertor or USB Casing would enable you to use the new PC drive in your older PC..

Why don't you concetrate an fixing the reason why your NEW PC won't boot into Windows instead? That would seem to be the ultimate goal anyway.
Have you tried booting into safe mode?

I agree with Brighteyes. If you try swapping a different drive in, you will mess it up so it will probably no longer work on the other system. Remove the drive and hook it up to another PC. If the old one doesn't work anymore, talk a friend into letting you do it.

I completely disagree here guys. Yes the computer will boot with the IDE drive. The operatiing system is the same but some of the drivers won't be installed. Ex. the video, audio etc for the new Mobo. You can install the ide as a master, install a basic video driver, reboot and install the SATA as a secondary drive. Once installed copy over the files then remove Ide, install SATA as master then format the SATA drive and go from there. If you don't wanna go through all that and you have another P.C. you can always get a HDD to USB adapter. I got one that connects IDE, Sata or 2.5 ide (laptop) HDD's to a power supply and UB connection so you can just hook it up as an external drive and pull whatever you want off of it. Around $30.00 from Micro-center. Good luck either way. Let us know how it goes.

The point here is that the OP has a new computer that isn't operating properly. Why would you want to move any drives at all. The issue is most likely a software (OS) issue. If it were hardware then it would be a warranty issue. Fix the new computer. At this point there is no need to wipe the drive, so no reason to do any file recovery. The OP hasn't indicated if the OS is OEM or retail. I haven't heard of sisnet brand but that means nothing.

To get the data off try a live linux cd. Copy to disk or networked share.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.

I believe he is just trying to get data off of his sata drive so he can reformat. Alot of ways to do that but i just suggested a few. I just realized that if he has another pc he can use the same connecter i mentioned earlier. It also has a sata connection.

Yeah i am trying to get the data off the SATA HD then reinstall OS on it. My old PC only has usb1 so it would be slow going with usb enclosure, that's why i wanted to know if i could move the Pata HD into new PC as master to retrieve data. I could also just get another HD and put OS on that and then transfer data from old HD.
