Hi,

I recently built a new computer system. Now that I have installed the OS (Win XP Pro), I would like to know what I need to do to move my slave hard drive from my old system to my new system.

Will I be able to simply transfer it into the new system without losing any info or is it more complicated than that. It is a 120 GB drive and almost full, so I would like to avoid backing it up if at all possible.

Thanks in advance,
Eric

double check the jumper, pop the HDD into your new system (personally, I'd make it the secondary slave), bootup, go into the BIOS & make sure the slave channel is set to auto detect (or see if it's already recognized the HDD). Save settings/exit, & let it reboot again...hopefully it will go to Windows & when you look in "my computer", the new drive will be listed & all will be well

Also you should know that certain programs won't work if they are moved to a new computer. You'll have to reinstall those programs. If its just data files you should be fine.

I only use the second hard drive for storage, so the program thing isn't a problem.

So, will the old system have any problems from my taking one of its hard drives out?

If the hard drive was set up as a slave on the old PC, then, no, it won't be any problem. It just won't see it anymore!

Just a quick second thought. When you remove the slave HD from your old system, you may have to move or remove the jumper on the Master HD. For instance, the Western Digital HD I just bought needs to have no jumpers on it if it's the only drive in the system. However, if I add a slave, I need to jumper the first HD to Master, and the second one to slave. No big deal.
