Transferring hardware from on chassis to a new one.

This will be my new computer if you can transfer hardware to a new chassis. My question is can I transfer my 2 Hard drives, floppy and DVD-R to the new chassis without issues.

YES, but Windows XP DELL OEM will no longer function, as XP is tied to the Optiplex configuration...........

if you are taking a hard drive from the dell with xp already on it and, moving it to a new motherboard, its not going to work. What kind of xp cd do you have?

Your version of XP (or should I say, Dell's version) will not work with the new motherboard. And the Dell CD will become useless to you for a reinstall. As WebsWonder said, it's tied to the Optiplex.

BTW, Okia PSUs aren't very good & neither is the board you selected. Actually, they're both downright bad. I wouldn't use either. If you haven't purchased them yet, I suggest you seriously rethink your hardware configuration.

What type of memory do you have in the optiplex.

Interested.

Yep a Dell cd will not work in the new system. "This is not a Dell " message will come up.

And trying to load a regular xp cd into a dell leaves you without all the drivers.

"No I have the cd full os"

You will still have to reinstall XP...at the very least, a "repair installation".

"So what is so bad with this?"

Some manufacturer's make good products out of good components & some manufacturer's don't. Okia & PCChips fit into the latter category. Do yourself a favor, get a good name brand PSU & plan on spending at least $50 (before any rebate is applied). And if you want decent performance, get a board based on an Intel or nVidia chipset...avoid VIA & SiS based boards.

my neighbors dell dimension 2400 came with an OEM version of XP SP1 that will install on any computer. You will run into the "activation problem".

The PSU choice was a good one, but the motherboard sucks. What are you gonna use this thing for? With that CPU & onboard video, apparently not gaming.

You can transfer your HDDs & other stuff, but it won't boot into windows without doing a "repair installation" of XP.

hey thanks for checking back jam

Mainly I just needed a faster processor. My dell has x86 Family 6 Mod 8 Step 6 Intel ~864 Mhz and that is kinda slow using cable modem. plus i want to be able to edit mini dv camcorder video and use a tv tuner to record cable tv. computer dvr I suppose.

so here is another intel mb.

There's no need to post all those specs...a link to the site would be sufficient. You obviously have your heart set on a barebones box from MagicMicro & you apparently don't wanna spend much...why don't you go with AMD?

Have you checked any other sites?

I'm just interested in a machine that gets the job done. all the spec #'s just confuses me and I was thinking it helped. the magicmicro does make it pretty simple to choose. I did a amd configuration and it was $2.00 less.I have all the componets so whay would I need to spend any more.

Apparently you know how to assemble the components, so here's a different approach:

Cooler Master Centurion 5 Silver Mid Tower Case - $25 (after rebate) w/free shipping:

http://shop4.outpost.com/product/50...

Corsair 2GB (2 x 1gb) DDR2-800 RAM - $25 (after rebate) + shipping:

http://shop4.outpost.com/product/49...

Antec earthwatts 430W PSU - $55 w/free shipping:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...

--

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ - $70 w/free shipping

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...

Open Box: ASUS M2NPV-VM GeForce 6150 Micro Motherboard - $65 (plus shipping)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...

--

That puts the total at approx $250 (after rebates, shipping included)

The only thing that you might find questionable is the open box motherboard. It's tough to find a decent AM2 board with onboard video AND two IDE channels. Here's a review of the board:

Apparently you get a kick out of building computers. I suspect you have a lot of experience at this. you've taken a lot of time searching this out. that mb takes care of firewire, and all the mini dv stuff. I have a lot of home work to see what this is all about and if this puzzle fits together without issue. looks like a new adventure. I have done all my pc work and with the help of this site which is unmeasurable. but i am very grateful for the knowledge i have learned a long the way. check back jam and thanks for all your insight. it looks like it fits my task for what i need a pc for. fast surfing and video edit, tv tuner.

yea, jam always finds the best deals. I got that 380 watt antec PS, he posted the other day, for a socket A system I'm rebuilding. The motherboard had bad caps. When I went to put the new one in I realized the power supply was 6 amps on the 12v. Then I saw your post. PS arrived today and, I'm posting from the system now. Thanks jam. already mailed off the $30 rebate. You can't beat an antec
for $20.
