i think i have two different problems, i'm
not sure right now. My mouse, MX518 Logitech
Gaming Mouse, will occasionally freeze and
there will be the sound of a USB mouse
disconnecting. This happens whether i'm
playing a game, watching a video or just
browsing the internet. The USB disconnecting
sound may occur very fast (<1 second delay)
or extremely slow (up to a minute delay)
after freezing. Then I have to either restart
my computer or take USB cord out and
reconnect it. This seems to happen in a cycle
sort of; when the first USB disconnect error
happens after a long time of it not
happening, it will usually happen frequently
after and then it will revert back to a
normal mouse with little or none of the USB
disconnect problems and then gradually back
to the USB disconnection error state. I am
also faced with another problem, the fact
that my mouse will not work in another USB
port other than the one I plugged it in when
i first got my computer. I've tried changing
the mouses but they do not work in ANY ports
whatsoever. I have even tried with my
brother's mouse which is basically the same
type of mouse except with a different color
and it didn't work in any of the ports. When
I connect another mouse, other than my
current one, I will get a error message that
states that there was a error in the hardware
installation. Also, there is usually no laser
emitting from the bottom of those mouses
except for when im starting up my computer.
But even with the laser, on the user account
selection screen, the mouse cursor was not
responding whatsoever. Also, my mouse works
on other computers (not sure about the
disconnect USB problem existing since I only
plug it in for <10 minutes). Can anyone help
me please?

Is this problem affecting just the USB mice that you've tried, or are any other USB devices affected (printer, scanner, etc.)? Do these other devices work when the mice do not?

Here's a shot in the dark: Go to Start>Run, type devmgmt.msc and press enter. Expand the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" tree, right click on each item that appears underneath and click Uninstall. Click OK and reboot. If the mouse and keyboard quit working after you click OK, just hold down your power button until the computer shuts off, wait 10 seconds, then turn back on. But if you lose only your mouse (because the keyboard is PS/2), just use your keyboard to restart Windows. After you reboot, Windows should reinstall all USB devices. During this time, your mouse and keyboard may not work. But this is normal until Windows reinstalls the drivers. This procedure may reset something.

ive uninstalled all the usb ports and restarted the computer but the mouse does not work now. ive tried plugging it in other ports other than the original but no luck. other usb-connected devices still work though such as mp3 players, usb storages and my printer. I get the "there may be an error with your hardware and it may not work" message when i plug out and back in the mouse. its the exact same message as when i tried a different mouse other than my own before. is there a driver-related problem?

Ok, when did this problem start happening? Has it been happening ever since you got the mouse? Did you install any software/hardware before this problem started?
If you used the driver CD that came with the mouse, go to Add/Remove Programs, locate the mouse software and click Remove. Put the mouse driver CD in your CD/DVD drive and reinstall the driver again. You may have to navigate with your keyboard unless you have a PS/2 mouse to hookup so the drivers can be uninstalled.
If you don't have the driver CD, check here:

i uninstalled setpoint and my mouse began to work again. i got a new mouse today since it was boxing day and its the G9 mouse and it was working with setpoint off. i installed setpoint with the given cd that came along with the mouse and the mouse stopped working again and started working again when i uninstalled setpoint. i posted a topic on logitech's support forum about this. also, thanks for helping me out!
