I posted on this a week or so ago but I have a Asus K8V-X and an Athlon 64 2800+ CPU. Sometimes on boot up, the computer just stays on the initial splash screen and does nothing. I swapped out the ram and it seemed fine for a few days but now its starting again.

Barring it being more bad ram (I doubt it but I'll test it), what else could cause this behavior? Bad motherboard? Power supply?

Thanks

It could be either of those. Do you have a known working power supply you could test with for a few days? Reseating all cards and RAM is always a good idea as well. Of course the MemTest is the way to start.

You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users

Thanks. I know the cables are firmly in the right place and ram is seated properly. The only card I have is my video card (AIW 9600XT) and its in properly. The LAN and sound are on the MB.

I should say the computer freezes at the Motherboard splash screen, not the Windows one, if that makes a difference. When I Ctrl-Alt-Del it seems to boot fine the second time.

I will try another round with memdoctor as well and post results here.

memdoctor turned out positive results this time so the new Simm is fine. The power supply was mentioned as a possibility. I recorded this from the BIOS:

12 volt - 11.80
5 volt - 5.16
3.3 volt - 3.296
vcore - 1.536

I don't know what the normals are supposed to be and if these are in that range or not. They flucuate a bit so these are the averages.
