I was curious I bought a computer cheap that I am trying to use as a tivo. I have an all in wonder 9800 agp card but I have not been able to get my motherboard to recongize it. The compaq has an intel 82801 chipset and it says 82845g which i think is the onboard video. What happens when I insert the video card it won't power on. The fans start for maybe 1 second then power off. I think this might have something to do with voltage. I was curious if anyone knows a way to get it to recongize this video card as I don't have any money in this computer and am just trying to get it to recognize this agp card. It won't boot till i take the video card out then it fires up with no problems. Any recommendations or am I out of luck. I appreciate your help in advance.

The 9800 has to be connected to the power supply, correct? Either you're forgetting to plug it in, or your power supply isn't capable of handling the extra load. Voltage isn't the problem...lack of wattage & amperage is the problem.

Did you REMOVE the power to the case/PS before you inserted the 9800 card? If you didn't you may have damaged the card and/or the AGP slot contacts and/or the circuits connected to those contacts. ATX mboards are always powering some places on ATX mboards as long as their is live AC power connected to the case, including contacts in the AGP slot.

The 9800 does require an extra power connection to the card, but it's not like the one for a PCI-e card - the card comes with an 3 connector wiring adapter that plugs into a larger drive power connector that has a small connector on it similar to a smaller (for a floppy drive) drive power connector that installs on a 4 pin header on the card. The card isn't all that heavy a current draw.

I looked at the specs for your system. Your power supply has only a 220 watt capacity. That probably is not enough capacity to handle the extra load of the 9800 AGP card.

Thanks for all the responses. At the time it didn't boot up the power suppy had never been used. Its a 430 watt power supply. I put the compaq in a new case to upgrade the power supply. When i took the card out it booted up fine. Then i tried putting the card back in the computer wouldn't boot. I did have it disconnected and the switch flipped off(on the back side of computer) . I did have the power supply connected to the motherboard. Not sure if that mattered. I also did plug in the adapter your talking about to the power supply. I hope this helps some.

If you did have the extra power connector connected to your card, I still think your problem is your PS is inadequate, or defective.
Do you know someone who has a computer you could try the AGP card in? Preferably one with at least a 300 watt PS?
Or someone who has a 300 watt or greater PS you could borrow temporarily to try with your computer? - you don't have to take out your PS from the case - just unplug its connectors and plug the connectors from the other one.
(The wire colors to the main connector on both PSs must be the same for every position - usually they are).

I finally got it to recongize the video card I used another power connecter on the power supply its a 430 watt powersupply. I will say though that I am noticing a slight burning odor. I am guessing I should RMA this power supply? Thanks for all your help I really appreciate it.

I'm glad to hear you got it working - any idea what you were doing wrong before?

A slight burnt odor is normal for a new PS, especially if it has a low rpm fan or fans.
The capacity is a lot more than you need for this computer so it should run quite cool, and if it has variable speed fans they may never run more than the lowest rpms.
If you could tell us what the make and model is we could tell you whether it is an el-cheapo model more likely to give you problems. If it came with the case, if you paid less than $50 or so for both, it IS an el-cheapo PS.

Apparently it was one of the plugs comming from he power supply I used a different plug(going from the power supply to video card and it worked fine) Its a Thermaltake TR2-430W. I bought it off of newegg and it had a rebate deal so yes it was like $24.99 It has a 3 year warranty so I am going to RMA it. I just bought it because i got this computer for 50 bucks from work and didn't want to put alot in to it. Thanks for your help!

Thermaltake PSs are in the middle - not el-cheapo and not high end. As I said in response 7 as long as it is only a slight smell, that is normal - I wouldn't jump to conclusions and RMA it yet. As long as the current voltages in the bios are okay (12, 5, within 10%; 3.3 v, the cpu core voltage within 5%) there's probably nothing wrong with it. If you want to be more sure, most mboard CDs also have a software hardware monitoring utility you can load in Windows to constantly monitor the same voltages and temps you see in the bios Setup current readings.
