Is a "socket mPGA478" board the same as a "socket 478" board?

I need to replace mine and my local store has one in but it is labelled as "mPGA478". Just want to make sure.

Thanks

yes.
pga means Pin Grid Array.
But you still need to make sure it is compatible with your CPU. (like different FSB speeds etc)

It is the same thing. Explain why you feel you have to replace it. Unless it's an identical board, you will have to reinstall XP (repair install)

I was tinkering the other day and tried to get my heat sink and fan off, it was stuck solid so i gave it a bit of force, a bit too much. I ended up putting a crack down the middle. Oh well :)

That was going to be my next question, it is an emachines pc, i know i will have to reinstall xp. Can i use my recovery disks? or will i have to get hold of an off the shelf copy of xp and reuse the product key on the side of the case?

If you use a non-eMachines board, you can't use the recovery discs.
