Hi everyone i recently had a major brain fart. I'm building a computer for my mom the motherboard and cpu has not arrived yet so i decided (because i'm impatient) i'll start working on installing an opporating system, and software on the harddrive but none of that matters. My case is open so to save time i shut down my computer and unplugged all the ide cables from the other harddrives and pluged in the new one. I couldn't fit it in the case so it was kinda half laying on the floor half propped up on the side i have NO idea what happened but the computer turned on then instantly shut off now i can't turn it on. a light on the motherboard comes on (its brown) but thats all i see the fans twitch the first time then nothing. I've tried a new powersupply i've taken all the pci cards out i've taken the ram out i've reseated my CPU i've tried resetting my CMOS. I'm lost for ideas the only thing i have left that i can think of is i fried my motherboard (OH NO!) does this sound possible? or is there another idea one of you smarter then me people out there can think of.

PS if it does come down to a new mobo what do you think of this?

What you were trying to do probably wouldn't have worked anyway, & it looks like you've learned an expensive lesson because of it.

Before you buy a new board, try it with the bare minimum connected to it...don't just remove the PCI cards, disconnect all the HDDs, CD drives, & floppy drive...if you have more than one stick of RAM, remove all but one. Try to boot with just the board, PSU, CPU w/HSF, video card, one stick of RAM, & keyboard...nothing else! If it doesn't work, try clearing CMOS again...make sure you unplug the PSU before doing it. Then see if it will boot...

Post back with your results....

check your ide connectors for a bent pin. all i can think of to explain the start up is a short somewhere. check your motherboard for a scratch or crack. try new ide cables. could it have been electrostatic discharge?

No offense, but it doesn't sound like you know what you're doing. So far, you've admitted to frying one CPU (I'd love to hear the story about that)...then you tried to preinstall XP on a hard drive for use on another system (which is just plain wrong), & when you did so, you apparently shorted something out & fried another CPU and/or motherboard too...& now you're ordering replacement components from a less than reputable reseller?

jam you got several things wrong. First off i'm not installing XP i'm installing 98. The system i'm using is very similar almost exactly the same as the computer i'm building. I'd be happy to tell my story of the fried CPU its quite entertaining (and i'll admit i didn't know what i was doing when i did it) and the bzboyz.com thing i'm feeling sorry about that i was stupid and in a hurry when i ordered the motherboard now i'm feeling a bit worried. Now on to how i fried my CPU

I was working on installing my water cooling system i just finished about 4 hours of cutting and all this junk you do. I was going to test the pump out and check for leaks to do that you have to turn on your computer. In the process of that i forgot to take the AMD proccesor out of the socket (i'm always in to big of a hurry) and turned the power on then it turned off. Right away i said who's cooking acorns. Looked up to see it sitting there no heaksink on of course and said BLOODY **** then smiled because i just realized i had the perfect excuse to upgrade my CPU. Thats the story of my Friday CPU fry.
