Motherboard Issue?

Comment:

I have just got a new ECS 755-A2 MB and Semperon CPU, but I can get no output from the MB.

I tried just having the MB, CPU, Power supply and Graphics card in the case, to see if it boots to the bios, but the monitor is dead. If I swap the MB with my old one - everything else the same - it works. I am assuming it must be a fauly AGP slot, or something else on the board, any other possibilities?

Thans for any help.

Does the new motherboard have a built in display card/graphics card? If so you will likely have to disable that via the BIOS first before additional cards will work.

You should always benchtest a board before installing it in the case. You don't mention RAM...did you have a stick installed?

The nearest match to your mobo is K7S5A2 version 1.0.

If this is your board it does not support the Socket A 166fsb Sempron, and I quote:

"Congratulations on purchasing the K7S5A2 mainboard. The K7S5A2 mainboard is an ATX mainboard that uses a 4-layer printed circuit board and measures 244 mm x 304 mm. The mainboard features a Socket 462 that accommodates AMD Athlon/Duron processors supporting frontside bus (FSB) speeds up to 133 MHz."

The ECS 755-A2 is Socket 754. Nuff said.

Did you connect the square, 4 prong power connector to the MOBO from the PSU?

Thanks for the replies.

Firstly, it doesnt have built in graphics at all.

Also, it definately does support the 754 semperon chips - it was sold in a bundle with this processor, and states it on the box and in the manual.

As for memory - I had one stick in most of the time, but tried it with both sticks, either and none as well.

I have been told my graphics card (Geforce2 MX-400) is too old, so have got a 4000 to see if that helps.

Thanks for the advice, and any more replies very welcome.

I've built 4 computers with this MOBO.

It will support your CPU.

I've seen the behavior you describe when I did not connect the square, 4-prong PSU connector to the MOBO. I've also seen it when the power switch connection from the case to the MOBO was incorrect.

A geforce 4000 is hardly an improvement over anything!!!

You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users

Thanks for the help Badboy - had a play and that was the problem - a bit embarassing when I look back at it!

GX1 Man - Well it an improvement over every geforce below it, so that is hardly true.

I was embarrassed when I did the same thing.

I'm glad it is working now.

Now my damn ram is running at half speed - 256 instead of 512 - and yet the memory spec is right for the board. The only thing I don't know is if it is ECC RAM, but the memory nor the website I got it from say.

Was it showing 512MB and now it is showing 256MB?

You might want to post this as a new problem so that others will see it.

Hello mpawsey:
I have the same problem, with 1GB memory posting as 512MB. I just installed a new ECS755-A2 Motherboard with Simpron 2600+ today and can't figure out what's up with the memory. I first thought that one of the DIMM slots was bad, but I've tried 4 different sticks of 512MB DDR, (2) 2100 then (2) 2700, and with 1 stick at a time in each slot, then in pairs, with matched speed although unmatched mfgs. Both slots seem to work, but they will only read 256MB per DIMM Slot. I've read that the Athlons 64 might register different speeds under different circumstances but nothing mentioned about the Sempron. I only have Windows XP Home Edition w/o Service Packs or updates installed, as yet, and the thing zooms through the post at start-up. I'm wondering if it actually is running 1GB, but only shows 512MB instead. I'd be interested to know what you find out.

I work at a computer store and we just got in 20 of these motherboards. Out of the 20 15 of them are doing the same thing (Only showing half the ram) When you put 512 it only reads 256 ram or when you put in 1 gig it reads 512. I emailed ECS and my supplier but they had no idea what the problem is. If anyone has a fix please let me know. Thanks

I have the same half-memory problem with my new 755-A2. ECS has a BIOS update with a comment which makes me think it may address this issue. As I don't have Windows installed until tomorrow (Linux-only so far), I am unable to test this. However, I did want to bring this to your attention...

I should add that the BIOS update can be found here: http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWeb/Downloads/ProductsDetail_Download.aspx?DetailID=381&DetailName=BIOS&DetailDesc=755-A2(1.0)&MenuID=35&LanID=9

Sorry for the repetative posts, but I (with a bit of help from google) found a post on another forum which indicates the same problem on the same chipset from another MB manufacturer. In that case, a BIOS flash solved the problem as well. Apparently, the problem lies in some reference code from AMD which didn't work quite right when implemented on this chipset.

Here's the post, if you're interested, and if you have the patience to read through a mound of insults and flamebait: http://hardware.mcse.ms/message243525.html

(And sorry for page-widening on my last post...)
