Motherboard issue or something simpler?

Good ol' HP support yielded no help. A computer repair man is guessing it is a motherboard issue.
No matter whether I hibernate, sleep or shutdown, the HP backlit logo and volume control lights on the keyboard remain lit and even flicker, whether lid is open or closed.
In addition, occassionally, the drive (hard or disk?) will still act as if it is still loading something.
I updated software and BIOS, changed some power setting, yet still having problems. The flickering is now causing some small noises.
The only thing I have done is open the computer and add an HP brand fingerprint scanner and software.

If it did work before then return it to that state and retest.

1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.
