Comment:
I have just busted my motherboard inserting new RAM, and am looking to buy a new motherboard, I can't find the model # of my current motherboard or manufacturer name?? I only know it is a socket 7 for my cyrixInstead 6x86mx cpu. Also how can i tell if it is ATX or AT or whatever?? Thanks
That MoBo is totally obsolete, try thrift stores, boot fairs and ebay to get a used Socket7 MoBo, make sure it is a dual AT/ATX board with 100fsb support then you can not go wrong.
btw ATX: MoBo has one rectangular block connector from PSU to MoBo and no connection is between PSU and power switch.
AT: MoBo has two 5pin rectangular block connectors sitting side by side from PSU to MoBo and a lead from PSU and power switch.
Saying that if it is a Dell/Compaq/HP etc it will quite likely be non-standard!

I think this might be the perfect opportunity to maybe look into buying a new motherboard and chip. You can find the best prices at http://www.pricewatch.com. I would probably recommend something with the Athlon XP 2600 chip on it. That seems to be the best value right now. Also look at reviews to find a good motherboard. You dont want to skimp on the motherboard just to save a few bucks. TRUST ME!

That socket 7 motherboard and Cyrix CPU had very little value, so breaking it might have just what you needed to upgrade. I'd look into barebone systems (motherboard/CPU/case) consisting of a processor running at around 1 Ghz (Athlon Thunderbird recommended). Anything more than that is probably a waste of money in your situation. Also, get at least 256 Meg of RAM. You may want to upgrade from Windows 98 someday. Good luck.
