I'm having problems getting the onboard soundcard AC'97 to work. Seems to install ok and shows no conflicts or driver problems in the device manager. still doesnt play any sound.

I'm using the software that came with the motherboard

3 dumb statements here, but we don't want to omit the obvious.
Make sure the speaker vo;ume is turned up.
Make sure the sound card is not muted.
Make sure the connecter is completely plugged into the back of the computer.

To add to the above reply, look in control panel, multimedia for preferred device. Set for "use any available device".

have you checked to see if there were any updates for it and is it showing in your device manager? If it's not showing then it is disabled in BIOS.

I had a strange problem with one AC'97 omboard adapter that drove me crazy for a while. If I turned the volume down on a couple of inputs that weren't being used it stopped all audio. Try turning the volume up on all playback and recording controls and turn off all muting.

"If it's not showing then it is disabled in BIOS".

If a hardware is disabled in the BIOS not only will it not install but it will not show up in windows. He did say it installed OK.

What kind of speakers do you have powered, analog or digital?. If it is a powered speaker make sure the ac adapter is plugged in and hopefully it is analog too.

Unmute all volume control settings, and make sure you are plugged into the correct jack the line out (usually green) on the back of the PC.

hello

I think you have Via audio on board. I did have trouble installing on Win98SE. But I did find it how.

You have to install manualy.
start->settings->controll panel
Add new hardware->next->NO select hardware from list->sound,videoand game controllers->microsoft

1.Microsoft kernel audio mixer
2.microsoft kernel GS Wavetable Synthesizer
3.Microsoft kernel system renderer

You are right Sabertooth, he did say that it installed OK so it is enabled in BIOS. My mistake. But he should still check for updates. I have the pro version and I'm pretty sure that there was an update for the sound. Do you have a CMI icon in your contol panel? If the software installed correctly then you should have it. Check in there and see if everything is the way it should be.
