Comment:

This question is directed at the folks who build their own systems.

What is the benefit of installing the drivers that come with the motherboard (i.e. disk driver, USB driver, etc.) over the drivers that are installed automatically by XP Pro?

Is performance or stability better? Or is it recommended for non Intel chipsets? I have not found much diffrence. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the input.

The MOBO manufacturer drivers are almost always better than then default, WINXP drivers.

Sometimes, the WINXP drivers don't work at all.

Worse is when they work, but work poorly and subtly degrade performance.

It's the difference bewteen drivers tailored to one specific thing and generic...the mfgr driver is usually specific to the needs of the motherboard where the generic Windows driver is for the"family" of like motherboards...but where you have to be careful, and of course none of this refers to old motherboards.
I am evern careful on Windows Update drivers and seldom use them as I have had some bad experiences in the past, especially with modem driver "updates". Whereas with other Windows Updates I take them all.

Actually Microsoft gets the drivers from the hardware suppliers. They could possibly be a little out of date, but normally should work. Microsoft does not write drivers for non Microsoft equipment.
