OS: WinXP
CPU/Ram: 242GHz, 512Mb
Product: Expotech
Comment:

Device Manager shows NO problematicals, until I do a fresh install of WinXP on another HDD. Then an EXTRA category shows called 'other devices' for Multimedia Audio Controller. I've been lead to believe that I need to download drivers for the motherboard to fix this. '4PS800-MX' is printed on the Asus motherboard - [confirmed by CPU-Z]. On the Asus website, that # is NOT listed for motherboards. DriverGuide provided drivers without a setup or install file. Other searches on that # return references to BIOS, rather than motherboard. But I know the BIOS is OK, because the native HDD does not show a probematical. How to solve ?

I think your board may be listed as "P4S800-MX" rather than "4PS800-MX". They may have misprinted the board...

Asus don't use unique urls for each board so you will need to go here and either search for "P4S800-MX" or use the drop down boxes.

If you use the drop down boxes there will be three drop down boxes. In the top one select "motherboard" wait for the page to load. After the page has loaded select "socket 478" in the second drop down box. After the page loads select "P4S800-MX" in the last drop down box and hit search.

You will probably get a message asking you to select your os. After you have you will get a explorer like view of the drivers available.

Obviously I can't be sure P4S800-MX=4PS800-MX but I think it definatley worth a shot.

Go to the Asus site & download the drivers. You'll need audio, video & LAN.

Or you can get them from SiS. Get the IDE & GART drivers too.

Belated THANKS
but for what ?
My error was ONLY in reporting to ComputingNET.
I had been searching for the correct driver before that error. I have now just looked at
http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l...
and it gives everything about the motherboard EXCEPT what I need - a driver download.
The URL for SiS gives me options I have no idea how to choose between - does NOT mention my motherboard or drivers for it.

I seem to be no closer to getting a driver.

Did you follow the advice I gave in my first post and follow the link I provided and either search the site or use the drop down boxes. It all seems to be working at my end.

The other link that was posted also works just go to the download button at the top left of the page.

There is one thing about asus driver downloads I forgot to mention, the drivers seem to be badly organised, in my experience the newest driver isn't always at the top, this means sifting through every release to find the newest one.

You could also try getting drivers from microsoft/windows update by running in advanced mode and going to the hardware section(link on the left of screen after the scan has finished).

The microsoft/windows update route won't necessary find any or all that your hardware need, so it sill probably a good idea to get your drivers from asus.

If you mean : did I go to http://support.asus.com/download/do...
etc, I DID. While I don't remember exactly what happened, I KNOW it did NOT give me the option to download a driver. I am NOT new to this, and have asked assistance because tried and true methods have failed me.
If the system works for you, can YOU please get the URL, so I can go there and get the download (pretty please ????)

Try this link first, if it works disregard the rest of this post. http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=P4S800-MX

[/edit]

That's not the link I posted, I haven't edited the link, I click on the link "here" and I get a live page as oppesed to the dead link you posted.

The other link that was posted, http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=12&l3=42&model=199&modelmenu=1# does have the info you need. There is a menu on the left of that page with the below items:

Overview

Specification

QVL Download

Download <<<<<click on this one

Awards

Click on the download link, the you will be greated with a drop down box to select your operating system from. At times you may also get a "server to busy" message, too many people are downloading at once, give ten minutes and try again.

I can't send you a link directly to the file because they are javascript links to start the downloads, they will only work from the page supporting them.
