I've just purchased a new ASrock KVT4A Pro motherboard after an old MSI board died on me. The new motherboard works fine with the RAM, CPU and Hard drive, but when i try to add an optical drive onto the second IDE channel, the whole computer shuts down when the drive spins up. I'm pretty sure I'm getting the jumpers correct and i've tried three different CD/DVD drives and tried using only one IDE channel. However the problem still remains. The Bios can see the drives, it's just when the disk spins up that the computer closes down. Anybody got any ideas?
Many Thanks.
Ian

I don't know what else you have running on the board but is the PSU up to the task of an extra drive?? The fact that another drive(s) cause the same problem suggest this OR that the MB has a problem with its power distribution.

All that is running is an AGP graphics card, RAM, CPU, Hard drive and optical drive. Power supply is 400W.

that sure sounds like a power issue to me, try a different PSU and see if the problem persists

It sure sounds like a weak power supply. I can't think of anything else that would cause it to act like that.

I agree...sounds like a weak PSU. And saying it's 400W doesn't mean much. What brand is it & how many amps are on the +12v rail?
