Linksys WRT54G2 with WMP54G adapter. This is working on my desktop computer. Have not yet tried connecting a wireless device such as a laptop to the network yet. I’ve a few questions since this is all new to me.

First, there are two icons on the taskbar, one for the Linksys Monitor which shows “scanning” when I mouse over it. If I open the Monitor, it says “Cannot associate with the Access Point”. And there is a second icon for Wireless Network Connection which tells me “Not Connected”. I am able to connect to the Internet, but not sure what I should do with the above.

Also, the documentation is not clear on whether I need to have the router connected to the Ethernet card on the pc. I thought the router would communicate with the WMP54G adapter. Am I mistaken?

Lastly, what default settings should I change to make this even more secure? For example, the SSID I think is one that should be changed? Anything else? I did change to WPA and AES per the recoomendations of one of you. Thanks everyone.

Yes, change the ssid, and if your really concerned about security setup mac filtering.
This is where only a set of allowed devices is allowed to connect to your network - this would be controled from the web interface of your router - the same place where you set up wpa.

I finally got it working, and the router sees the WMP54G card. But cannot get Internet access. I have done the resets etc. I must be still missing something. The Port LED on the router will not light.

I can see the neighborhood wireless nets. LOL
