Hi All I have a HP Vectra VL that originally had win 95 on it....I now have 98se on it and have had it for some time....I want to install windows Xp and I know I am going to need more Ram or a bigger harddrive.

Now my first question is..Does a bigger hard drive = more ram?

And secondly Where would I go to purchase more ram or a hard drive and

do all hardrives plug in the same..therefore will fit in my pc no matter where i buy it from?

where is a good place to start looking?

thanks

Hi,

First of all, what kind of cpu do you have? It may not run XP at all. Hard drives and ram are two different things, and hard drives are universal, so you would just take out the old one and put in the new one. You'd have to find out what kind of ram you have now to make sure you get the same kind or compatible, but I would check your processor first, especially if it originally ran 95.

the bigger hard drive will not give you more ram.i get most of my stuff from best buy or staples.from the ones i have put in they or most of the time plug in were the old one was.you can get good deals off the net for this stuff but i buy local that way if it is messed up just take it back.

Does it have an "Intel Inside" sticker on it? that sticker will tell you what type of CPU is in the computer. if it says "Pentium" then you wont be able to run XP...at least not very well
If it says "Pentium II" then it will run, but slowly
Next, go to My Computer and *right* click on your "c:" drive, and choose properties. This will tell you the size of the drive (Example: 2.1 GB)

Finally, go to my computer, then control panel, and click on "system" and this will tell you the memory(24.0 MB RAM)
Hope this helps
Rob

You should get a bigger hard drive, 2.99 gigs is a little small, especially since XP itself will take 1.7 gigs.
128MB of RAM is enough, but an upgrade to 256 will make it run a lot faster on XP.

I figure it can be upgraded, but it would be much wiser to get a newer motherboard. With everything new coming out today it makes more sense to get a more updated computer, rather than dumping money into an older one. Plus you'll likely get XP with your new one.
