according to the page you provided, it seems your laptop only supports 66 and 100 MHz RAM, so the second RAM you posted from eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI... would work fine, but the other wouldn't, because it 133 Mhz.
If your looking to upgrade your RAM, then you should look for a 512mb stick instead of a 256mb, seeing your max is 512mb.
Thanks for that info. I was looking at the 512mb ram but it is beyond my budget. I am on a pension. Since I am using Ubuntu things are pretty fast. I am also thinking of the small amount of funds I have sitting in paypal. Oh also I noticed some of the ram listed on ebay say said '256mb pc100 sd ram *A1'. What is the A1 or b something about?

Not all PC133 is the same, many sticks are CL2.5 or CL3, if you look at the Crucial page it states CL2. Also Crucial Gaurauntee the Memory will work......
Your Laptop is limited to 2 - 256MB sticks. Have you determined that you currently have only one stick? Possible you could have 2 - 128MB sticks. In that case you would need to pull one or more sticks in order to up the memory.
Also, laptop RAM can be very fussy. I suggest that you go to Kingston, Crucial, Mushkin and look for system specific RAM. As Bakers pointed out Crucial.com guarantees their RAM to work. Disturbingly, in the last week there have been two threads here indicating a decline in Crucial's reliability.
Using an online scan of your laptop will indicate if your current memory consists of 1 or 2 modules. It will also give you a number for a compatible module.
I have 2 x 128mb stick in the machine right now. Originally I had one stick and I added another from an even older machine i found. I understand about the fussiness as someone gave me a 256mb stick a few month ago and my machine didn't like it. The stick worked but not in my machine. The friend that gave it to me ....well I gave it back to him and he used it in another lappie. So yes I am looking at getting 2 x 256mb stick now if I can afford it. Is system specific ....do you mean Dell as the machine is a Dell?

About the Kingston ram? I did see that they were talking about some recommended ram brands but I don't know if that is an absolute or not. I didn't see ibm memtioned. Btw I got an email from a friend that had a stick of ram that was 256mb pc133 and it didn't work on my machine. I only remembered this when he emailed in responce to me asking if he had any sticks. He also had forgotten that we tried his stick of ram before in my machine. It was several months ago and we are always giving each other pc parts.
