monitor wont come on

Specs: Windows Vista
I have a 97 packerd bell desktop monitor, it started flickering in and out,for 2 seconds as if it was taking a deep breath, worked fine approx. a month- changed resolutoin, now it wont come on at all. Worked fine for a while until today. Is it time to get another one, if so, does it need to be the same kind for my gateway upright hard drive? Thanx Ester

I think the CRT (cathod ray tube) has seen it's better days. A replacement doesn't need to be the same kind or brand. It simply needs to be compatible with your VGA display card. Most state this as "D-Sub" as the connector is a D shape with 15 pins. A wide screen monitor may not "look right" if the display card doesn't support those resolutions. 1920 x 1080 is a widescreen resolution where 1024 x 768 is a regular 4:3 monitor like the CRT's.
