Comment:

I recently bought a new computer and put it on my old monitor. The monitor will run for a while and then it will power down at random. If I let it sit for a minute or two and turn it back on, it will work for a bit then power itself off again.

The monitor never had this problem on my Windows 98 machine with 800x600 and 16bit settings (which is what I have on my new XP machine).

Any help with what might be going on here would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Bart

Hi bart:
Do you have the latest Win XP drivers for that monitor, if you can also try a different monitor on your new PC to see if problem still happens.

Good luck,
Z

Hi
Thanks for the reply.
I will try to look for some drivers for it. I have tried another monitor and it works fine on my new machine and the old monitor works fine on the old machine.
Thanks for your help.

CHeck the REFRESH rate Bart. Older monitors cannot take high refresh rates, and if XP does not have a profile for that monitor, it may well be overdriving it. Go into screen properties and select ADVANCED in the SETTINGS tab. Check the monitor refresh rate setting in the MONITOR tab. Knock it back to the next lowest setting and see if that cures the problem.
for reference, 60Hz is default but a bit iffy in florescent lighting, 70 and above better.. Modern monitors can go above 100Hz depending on the resolution, and XP is best used and viewed at 1024x768, and cannot be set lower than 800x600...:o)

Safe Computing...:o)
