Specs: Windows XP
i have a dell dimension 4600, the computer has 4 ram slots with a recommended maximum ram allowance of 4gb.
It had 1 gb of ram( on two 512mb cards). i updated the ram to 4 gb of ram, (4 x 1gb cards) now the monitor is shutting down after a few minutes.

I am new to updating hardware on a computer and dont know what to do, any help would be appreciated.

That's correct. Is just the monitor shutting off or does the computer shut down? Since you never used some of the slots before, try snapping the ram in and out of the slots a few times to clean out any corrosion. You can also try using one stick at a time and see if it boots. You may have a bad stick. Is the new ram recognized in the bios screen when you boot up? You can also try running Memtest, which is a memory testing software. Download the windows version here.
