after I turn on the system, the monitor remains in standby mode. I have no operating system on the machine yet and there's no way to install one without the display. I can hear one beep so it does POST alright. I'm thinking about switching the monitor for another one but if this doesn't work then what else could it possibly be? it's an ASRock P4S61 motherboard, 3ghz P4 processor, the power supply is 400w so it isnt being overtaxed or anything. I've tried it with both my video card and onboard video and neither works. Thanks for reading.

It could be a couple of things. From what
I understand, you've just assembled this
comp. right? Can you try your monitor on
another system to make sure it's
defective?

If everything was correctly put together,
when starting up you should get directly to
the bios screen, even if your ram and
hard disc were not installed.

If your monitor don't get any signal it might
be because the integrated video of your
motherboard is not working properly. It
could also be a cpu problem.

I would:

First: if possible check if the monitor is
working properly.

Second: check every connections to the
mobo and make sure the cpu heatsink is
not touching any other components than
the cpu and cpu socket.

Third: unplug your drives cd/hd and usb
connections and try starting up.

Afeter all that, I would recommend you
return the hardware to your retailler so
they can identified and replace the
defective components.

If you get the single post beep, then it's either the monitor, video card or cable between them.
