I met a strange problem with my desktop monitor. After
running for a couple of hours, the whole screen turned
black, and part of the screen was white. The white part
becomes smaller and smaller. When the white part almost
disapears, the monitor works again. The whole procedure
is around 10 minutes. I am not even sure if it is a monitor
problem, or display card problem. Does any one know
how this happens and how to solve it? Thank you very
much.

Sounds like the monitor is on the fritz, to answer your question how this happens it is possible that a capacitor inside the monitor is breaking down and through heating up and then cooling down you could see this behavior, have you tested the monitor by plugging it into another machine and see if it occurs on it, everything above could apply to the video card as well just a bit less likely, here is what you may not want to hear the part that is failing could be as inexpensive as $1.00 – 2.00 and because of labor costs could be $50.00-75.00 to repair, might be time to start shopping for a new one.

Keep the old stuff running

I promise this is not a screen saver problem.

I did not try to plug the monitor with another machine yet. I
just have one desktop, and one laptop at home.
