one of my 17" crt monitors has decided to quit. it turns on for a few secs the the image goes away, though screen still has power. is not a system problem. can the screen be fixed somehow? does anyone here know anything about the inner workings of monitors?

Argue for your limitations and sure enough, they're yours.

Very dangerous to try and fix CRT monitors and TVs yourself. There are high voltages inside that can be lethal.

Rule #1: Good Computers don't go down.
Rule #2: There is no such thing as a good computer.

...and if you take it to a technician the cost is likely to be more than it is worth.

Have you checked it isn't a system problem by connecting a know good monitor and seeing if that works.

Whack it with your hand. If that doesn't fix it take it to a qualified repairman or stuff it in the attic and buy a new one. CRTs are dangerous if they've been used recently, as they store power in internal components.

I agree w/ MordredHaidar. Whack it on the side, towards the back. If that dosn't work, do it harder, but not too hard.

If God has to teach someone a lesson more than once for them to learn it, it just shows how stubborn they are.

Do you move the PC a lot? I have a monitor that sometimes goes out and wont come on. What I have to do is turn it upside down with the screen facing down. Hit it while that way until I hear a noise from it and then I know it will work again. I know this sounds fishie, but it works.
