CPU/Ram: n/a
Product: CTX / P973L LCD Monitor
Comment:

Can anyone please help with this fault, it is driving me nuts.

Over a period of many months my CTX monitor has progressively got worse and now it no longer powers-up. Please help identify any possible faulty component. The 3 stages of the simptoms are as follows :-

Stage-1
My CTX P972L LCD Monitor started showing tearing ( interference type ) lines over the full screen after pressing the Power-On button but soon cleared and full video became present and stable until the next switch on.

Stage-2
The problem got worse in that when the tearing lines disappeared I would have a blank screen and no video signal also the power button became inoperative and was locked in the ON position ( blue LED on all the time ), I couldn't switch it off. To resolve this I had to remove the power plug then replace it. The power button would then work fine and no tearing ( until next time on power-up ).

Stage-3
Now the monitor wont power-up at all ( no LED lights on the power button, blue or amber ) however, on removing the power plug the blue LED lights momentarily. Similarly the blue LED lights up momentarily when re-inserting the power plug. Then the power-on button no longer lights up when pressed and the monitor remains totally dead.

There are two PCB's in this monitor - one Power Supply and one Video board. I have traced the cable from the On/Off s/w and it goes to the Video board first, ( not the Power supply as I would have expected ).

Please can anyone suggest a possible component/s that could be the culprit ( a specific Capacitor maybe, but which one ? ). I am reasonably familiar with PCBs and their componant's but very rusty on fault finding especially without a circuit diagram. So your technical expertise would be greatly appreciated to point me in the right direction and help me trace this fault. [Regrettably, I only have a good quality Multimeter to test with].

Best regards,
Hutchy.

PS - The Monitor is out of Warrantee.

Being quite frank, I doubt if you are going to have any luck finding the faulty component. Then trying to unsolder & fit a new component is not easy on pcb's nowdays.

You might be able to order a complete pcb, if anyone can suggest the right one. But then the cost of a pcb will probably be more than buying a new monitor.

However I wish you luck.

Before posting try google. Backup. Use anti virus software.

Thanks Clive, but I'm sure it is a power supply fault (fingers crossed) if so replacing a component would be no trouble. however, I agree that if it is the video board, it would be very dificult as this is where all the micro surface mount components are. (forbidden territory).
I was hoping someone would recognise the symptom which could map me to the right fault area and suggest a component/s to check.
Anyway, thanks again for your response.
Regards, Hutchy
