Recently I turned on my CPU and I got this out of range error message. I've recieved it before about 5-6 times and when I do I just go into safe mode and use system restore. It usually allows me to reboot and continue running in 1024*768. This time I got it to restart but it won't go any higher than 800*600. I have a radeon 9000 PRO, and if I go to "list all modes" 1024*768 is listed there, but if I select it I get the out of range error. I haven't changed any refresh rates or anything for that matter, it just did this at random. Any ideas?

could also be the frequency, at 1024x768 a standard 17" crt should do 85hz, i recommend you set it to the resolution you want then set the frequency to 60hz which is standard but bad on your eyes! 72hz is seen as the minimum for good quality so if you can get to that then your ok. btw my monitor tells me when it says out of range what the problem was if it was too high resolution or too high frequency so tell us what it says under the out of range message!

It is possible to damage a monitor by attempting to run beyond capabilities. Is your monitor identified by model or just as PnP monitor? If by model you should be able to set the catalyst software to display only settings that the monitor can display.

Woops, guess I forgot some stuff. The frequency right now is set to 60 Hz. Under the error message, it exactly says..."Out of range, Set resolution lower or see monitor user guide." It's a 15 inch compaq MV540 monitor. I just don't understand why out of the blue it comes up with this error.

Well if it was out of the blue, then maybe you have a faulty monitor perhaps?
Do you have another monitor you can try?
