Try right-clicking on the desktop, select properties, then settings tab. Here is where you should see boxes for each monitor, numbered 1 & 2. As a quick fix, select whichever monitor is not designated as the primary and uncheck the box by "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor". Click apply, then ok. Then restart your computer. When it reboots all the icons should have jumped to the primary monitor and when you open a program it should come up within the boundaries of the single monitor. From there you can begin tweaking again to get both monitors set up.

thanks for that Rufus! However the problem that i have got is that when i click on the desktop and select properties the folder has opened but dissapeared somewhere off to the right hand side side of the monitor. So hence i cant see the files to change or revert back to my 1 monitor setting!!

Ok, how about pressing F8 when booting up and selecting Safe Mode. Does that then allow you to get to the properties window?

Another idea:

Right-click desktop, select properties. When window opens and flies away do:

Press Shift-Ctrl-Tab to jump to the Settings tab of the window.

Press Tab twice to get to screen resolution.

Press Left Arrow once to reduced resolution

Press Tab five times to get to "OK" button.

Press Enter to accept.

Press Tab once to toggle from "No" to "Yes" for keeping the settings.

Press Enter to accept the new resolution.

Once the resolution is resized, it might make things open within the new boundaries.

This is all based on the assumption that my dual monitor setup and yours will behave the same and that by changing the screen resolution will force newly opened windows to remain visible.
