I have a HP Pavilion 760n which I brought from the US to the UK. It worked OK in the US. Now here in the UK, it is being used with a brand new HP Pavilion MX 70 monitor. I have changed the voltage to 230V. The indicator on the PC lights OK (green). Once the PC is turned on, the light on the front of the monitor changes to amber from green. The screen is pitch dark. Can't even see the initial boot info. Turning off the PC poses a problem as I have to keep my finger on the power button to turn it off. Also the USB optical mouse light does not come on; so is the num lock light on the keyboard. None of these problems were present while using the PC in the US. Any help?

This may sound like a stupid question but,
Are you sure your PC is booting up? Does it go threw all the normal motions(IE the testing of the floppy drive and Hard drives, you can usually hear when these are being tested and hte floppy light will flash for a bit)

I asked that because it sounds like a problem I had with a older computer and somehting my friend just went threw. Both cases the monitor gave a out of frequency range message, the problem was the MB died and there wasnt anything being sent to the video card.

Try hooking up another monitor to your machine, if that doesnt work I'll bet Euros to truffels your MB is cooked(sorry for the bad news).

shipping the comp to UK may have lossed something inside. I do not know the power in the UK is it 60hz if not you may have to change the power supply. If you can check the voltage at a hdd or floppy connector and be sure you have 5v and 12v, red and yellow are hot, not sure which is the 5v or 12v and the black is return.

Still, if the Floppy or HD were not connected or powered the PC would still put up and the monitor would show a image. I'm betting your MB is fried.

When the computer is on and the monitor light goes green does it stay green?

The presence of a steady green light indicates that the video card is sending something to the monitor. I'd be surprised I'd the motherboard were bad.

Does it beep after passing the POST? If so then the motherboard is probably OK.

does the monitor work on another computer?

After a long journey like that you should reseat the boards and connections in the BOX. when it's open make sure you use a grounded wrist bracelet or al very least a hand on the chassis.

You'll have to get the video working to continue from here unless you have another computer you can use to verify your system components.

Thanks guys for all your suggestions. Some facts:
1) The monitor light immediately changes to amber as soon as the PC is turned on. It does not stay solid green.

2) PC beeps once after POST indicating all is well.

If the PC beeps once and the monitor light is amber then the video card has been damaged in such a way that allows the system to see it without knowing that their is a problem. I would try a different video card and see what happens then. Oh, and I thought that their was an issue with using European power with US power supplies or has that been resolved in the newer PSUs?

Known problem. I have a brand new set (amd 2400+,512mb,a7v8x,gainward ti4200gs,aopen 350w) and just the same trouble. No video on the display (Philips 151ax) at all. Not even during startup. My machine worked just fine for one week, and then one morning... nothing. It seems to boot up just fine, but not a single thing on the screen (exept "no input video"). I have tested the monitor - it works. I put another videocard (pci) into the computer - no joy. I have reset the BIOS - no joy. I have checked all the connectors. The only thing causing the problem (exept a collapse of the MOBO) could be the memory?? Every single item in the computer seems to work.... but no picture! My idea was to build a computer using so called "quality components".....
