Subject: monitor image goes off-center
OS: vista
CPU/Ram: /
Model/Manufacturer: hp
Comment:

Every so often the image on my monitor goes off center to the left and becomes streaky and blurry. It will stay that way for anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes, then revert to normal. My monitor is about 6 years old. Do I need a new one?

Test it with another monitor before you buy anything. If it happens with a second monitor, change the video card.

The computer I have is less than a year old, so I doubt it is the video card. But then again, what do I know. You guys are the experts.

We can guess all day. Swapping the monitor will eliminate guessing.

If I had another monitor I would have done that to begin with. Also the problem is intermitentent, and it would be days if not weeks before I really knew for sure. I just wanted to know if there might be somthing else I could try first.
Thanks, Kathie

It's usually one of two things, the monitor or the video card. Changing one or the other will give you the answer. It's up to you.

You can also look in the event viewer for errors.
start run, eventvwr.msc

I'm sorry, even if I understood any of that, which I don't, the log times don't match the problem times, and none of it seems to apply to the video card or monitor. Anyway, I went ahead and bought a new monitor, and have had no problems since then, knock wood.
