monitor has lines and snow after Vista plug

Specs: Windows XP
System:
Windows XP Pro Ver.2 SP2

Computer:
Intel Dual Core 1.8Ghz
1Gb RAM

when i put new HD (w/ VISTA) as primary slave, monitor has lines and snow, completely unreadable.so i placed back the old HD (w/ XP pro), it worked fine, good resolution. can I check new HD for errors using the old HD as primary slave?

The video should be normal while booting BEFORE windows loads from the hard drive no matter what.
The monitor and the video adapter does not need any data from the hard drive to display properly before data loads from the hard drive.

If it wasn't normal while booting BEFORE windows loads from the hard drive, you probably - un-intentionally had knocked the video card in a slot part way out of it's slot.
- or - the monitor's video cable wasn't all the way into it's port
