I have an old Gateway (about 5 years) and am using the LCD monitor that came with it. It's an FPD1830 model. It seems like, just recently, whenever I go to turn it on, after it hasn't been used in several hours, the display flickers for a few seconds. I'm not sure why. I haven't done anything like messing with the monitor cable. However, I did check to make sure that the connection was tight. Could the monitor be going out? Thanks.

LCD are very sensitive to dust, humidity and time (LOL!!!). they can be easily broke down. A couple of months my gf was spraying one of those fragance sprays in my room. (sadly above my LCD monitor) so after 7 seconds when she spray the fragance, my monitors just flick and turns off. sometimes things like that happens without been notice. (BUt i notice) OUCH!! also make sure that your monitor is connected to a UPS or something like that. They are very sensitive on electricity currents too... make sure is getting the correct voltage and that your wall outlet its giving the correct voltage, polarity and that it has ground. If you don't know how try another wall outlet or hire a electrician so it does the dirty work for you... Someone reccomend me once a 3 plung wall outlet that shows you with leds if your wall outlet is correct. I bought mine at home depot...

Hope this information works for you GL!! and happy troubleshooting...

Taking all the symptoms described it sounds to me like the LCD electronics have gone rickety. Luck of the draw - probably due for replacement.

Usually the problem is your backlight or the voltage inverter for it or both.
For some info about replacing a voltage inverter or backlight, and what some typical symptoms are, see response 5 in this:
