Monitor goes black while I'm workin

I'm not sure whether the problem is with my monitor or not. When I'm using my computer, the screen will suddenly go black. The green light is still on, and I can shut the monitor off and on, but it just goes from black to very black. I can hear my CPU- it appears to still be on, and I was connected to the internet via telephone line and when I picked up my phone, I heard the screeching that indicates the computer is still connected to the internet. So, that leads me to believe that the problem is with the 6-year-old monitor. *But* when I pushed the CD-ROM button on my CPU to see if the CPU was working, the CD-ROM didn't open. So, now what? I usually "remedy" the problem by turning off the power strip and turning everything back on. (The monitor comes up fine.) My e-machine (I know, I know) is almost two years old. I also installed an Etherfast 10/100 LAN card about a year ago, if that matters. Any thoughts? I have no idea where to begin. Thanks.

Thanks for the info, vanusk. Question, though: My screen goes black while I'm typing on my keyboard or clicking with my mouse, not when it's been sitting inactive. That doesn't sound like what you're talking about, right?

hmmm then its not the suspend mode then...it is most likely a video card problem then...if you have another video card try placing it where the one you have is on now and see if that helps...if not... email me if you have further questions/problems or post them here

Thanks again, vanusk. I don't have another video card, but maybe I should just check to see if mine has come loose and go from there? My e-machine (I know, I know) is still under warranty at best buy, so I might call them tomorrow and see if they can help me somehow. I have a feeling I may have to pay an arm and a leg for service though, so I'm first going to try to do as much troubleshooting as I can. Thanks so much for your help. I really appreciate it.
