Moniter doesnt display

Specs: Windows Xp
This has happened twice, I had recently put a 8600gt into an older compaq that my friends mom gave me. It has 2 gigs of ram and sempron 3200+ processor. I had left it running over night a couple days ago, and when i woke up it was running extremely loud. Anyway i turned it off and when i went to turn it back on and the moniter stays black although the computer has the start up sound and it seems like its running. Anyway i got rid of the 8600gt and just decided to use the onboard graphics. And the same thing happened again, but this time with the onboard graphics. And i dont really have another graphics card to possibly waste again. If you have any ideas please let me know. thanks

The loud noise may have been a failing fan that wasn't cooling properly and the computer overheated.

Try the monitor on a different computer and/or try a different monitor on your computer.

i figured it had to do with something over heating, but i turned on the computer last night and the display was back. and its been fine all day today. so maybe it continually overheats? but its also the onboard graphics and the case is open.
