I'm trying to set up Modem-On-Hold on an unbranded V92 PCI modem with the Intel 537EX chipset.
This of course is the feature which works with 'Call Waiting' to alert you to an incoming voice call when online, then when you pick up the receiver to talk the modem sends a hold signal to your ISP for a set time, and the data resumes when the voice call ends - there's no disconnection, and you don't miss a call.
I entered this string in the modem's AT commands to enable both Modem-On-Hold and the faster PCM data upload (at 48,000 instead of 33,600).
AT+PMH=0; +PCW=0; +PIG=0;
I've managed to get it so that the modem does go on hold when a call comes in, and all data transfer stops, but this provides the *only* indication that someone is trying to call.
So if a web page had fully loaded when a call came in and I was busy reading the text I'd have no visual clue that someone was trying to get through.
Is there generally supposed to be some other indication with this V92 feature - should a pop-up appear or should the PC's speaker or the modem make a sound?

You need a Modem-On-Hold application program that goes with the modem drivers. Usually this type of program can be downloaded from the OEM modem manufacturers web site or you can try the Intel chipset support page to see if they supply one.
As for the faster PCM data upload, you understand that this reduces your actual download speed, and you only get the faster upload speed if the ISP's modems support the option. Many ISP's do not support the faster upload, and the quality of some phone lines do not allow the higher upload speed without too many errors.

Thanks - I've managed to get a program called FaxTalk Communicator, and there's now a pop-up and sound with an incoming call. :-)
I have unlimited dial-up access for only £5 a month so being able to use Modem-On-Hold is a much cheaper way of not missing phone calls than getting broadband at 4 times the price.
Speed wise, I'll have to test the PCM performance, quite possibly my ISP doesn't support that particular function, as so far the connection is neither faster/slower than before.
