Subject: modem won't work at grandparents hoOS: XPCPU/Ram: P4 512 RamModel/Manufacturer: Dell Dimension 4700 |
Comment: Okay so my Grandparents have called on the young whipersnapper to fix their computer, specifically the modem which won't dial up. So I tried and I tried, but I couldn't make the modem dial up. So I took the computer home to my house and tried dialing up and it connected to the internet just fine. So I took it back to their house and it wouldn't connect to the internet again, it just gives me an error message saying it can't establish a connection. The ISP she is trying to use is peoplePC, although I don't think it matters because I tried Juno and got the same error message, and connected to Juno from my house. We live in the same area code and aside from call waiting their telephone service is identical to mine. Any ideas?

Reply: (edit)The ISP and/or modem setup should ask about call waiting. Since one line has it and the other doesn't, did you make the necessary changes to that setting when moving the PC? Or maybe your Grandparents just configured it wrong.

Reply: (edit)The line that connects to the PC definatelly has a dial tone. I already hooked a phone up and made a call from that phone jack, just to make sure that it works. My grandma has used a modem to connect to the internet from that exact spot in the past, it's just that ever since she got her new computer a modem has never worked. I wanted to make sure the modem worked so I hooked itup at my house--it worked just fine. She has call waiting, but that has never been an issue in the past.

Reply: (edit)Have you gone to the Setting Control Panel Phone and modem options Modem Properties Diagnostics Query modem This will tell if the modem is configured properly. Have you also check Setting Control Panel System Device Manager Modem Are any yellow exclamation marks on the modem? Does Pc People have a forum for problems and have you checked there for solutions? Does PcPeople provide the software for dailing in or do you use the MS network dail-in software? Never say Never Romeo Void Firefox 1.0.7 A Safer Browser Thunderbird 1.0.7

Reply: (edit)You do *NOT* advise where you are based. Here in the UK, some old lines are still set for pulse dialing. Others are set for both pulse and tone Some for tone only. e.g. If your modem is set for tone dialling on a pulse only line it will not work. Also, are you using the same modem cable at both locations (failed and working), as if not, connections can differ. Good Luck - Keep us posted

Reply: (edit)Mike, it was said another older PC had worked of the same line before. But like Mike said, check the cables for connecting. If it's a new PC, contact the manufacturer and request a modem replacement. Just out of curiousity, what is all plugged into the power bar with the PC? Does the power bar have a surge control for the modem line? If so and you are using it, try plugging directly into the phone jack on the wall into the PC. Post back Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

Reply: (edit)We have tone dialing here in Oregon, USA. It's set for tone. I tried bringing my modem cables to their house and hooking it up with those cables, and I ran a long cable from a different phone jack, all with the same result--wouldn't work. I don't think the modem is bad, because I tested it at my house and it worked. They did have a fax machine, which my grandma unhooked just in case it was causing problems, modem still wouldn't connect. I'll call and ask about the stuff in the power bar tommorow, it's kind of late right now. tiyogi I looked in device manager for devices with errors, the modem is fine. I will call tomorrow and see about querying the modem from that menu. Yes the modem is directly plugged into the phone jack. I think maybe I'll take my modem over there and see if that will connect...

Reply: (edit)I still say you should check the dialing properties. 98 has a phone dialer in PROGRAMS--ACCESSORIES--COMMUNICATIONS. I assume XP would have something similar. You can dial another number, perhaps a second line in the house or a cell phone you have with you, and see if it rings. You can also lift the receiver on a phone on the same line after the number has been dialed to see what it's doing. Do you hear the handshaking noises, a busy signal or a recorded phone company message?

Reply: (edit)" ....aside from call waiting their telephone service is identical to mine." You MUST disable call waiting in order to connect to the internet. (It is only disabled when the phone line is being used on the computer.) You did not say what operating system your grandparents are using. Win 95/98/98SE/ME To disable the Call Waiting feature, perform the following steps: 1. Double-click My Computer. 2. Double-click Control Panel. 3. Double-click Modems. 4. Click Dialing Properties. 5. Click to select the To disable call waiting, dial check box. 6. In the To disable call waiting, dial box, click the appropriate code to disable the Call Waiting feature, for example: *70, 70#, or 1170. NOTE: The geographical area where you live determines what this code is. Call your local telephone carrier to obtain it. 7. Select whether you want to dial using tone dialing or pulse dialing. Then click OK to save your settings. ..... Win XP (and probably 2000) Control Panel - Phone and Modem Options Dialing Rules - click on Edit click on box beside "To disable call waiting, dial" to insert a checkmark and enable it click on arrow in wite box to select the one that applies to your area, or type in one if it is different. You can also select Tone or Pulse dialing there.
