Comment:

I am trying to install a PCI modem but cannot get it to work. I am getting this message from my diagnostic utility (ModemTest 1.3) but have no idea how to interpret it or how to fix the problem! (It is on COM1, IRQ 4, no conflicts showing in Device Manager.)

Here is the bit where it sticks:

MODEM INIT, Trying to Detect Modem
Wed Dec 15 15:11:32 2004
ERROR, Unable to detect modem on this COM port: A serial I/O operation completed because the time-out period expired. (The IOCTL_SERIAL_XOFF_COUNTER did not reach zero.)

A:Proper driver for the modem not loaded
B:Bad modem
C:Try a different PCI slot

Thanks

Have installed (and reinstalled) the proper driver.
Have tried a different PCI slot.
Suspect it may be a bad modem from what you are saying.

Well well! It was the wrong driver. I was told it was a multitech modem with a given name/no and found the correct driver for that name/no.

But on taking the modem out and looking at the chips with a magnifying glass it is an Ambient modem!!

Thanks for the advice. Will now download the correct driver. So often the solution is simpler than one thinks!

"unknown device identifier" will identify your hardware. Then you and right click the device in the listing and choose "Find Driver" it will google a search for the right driver for your card.

You can find the hardware utility by doing a search on google.

Hope this helps.
