Modem install problem

I'm trying to put together a Compaq (0400h), Chipset : Intel i440BX/ZX, Processor : Intel Pentium III @ 498 MHz, 128 MB (2 x 64 SDRAM PC125 @ 125 MHz.)

It's running WinXP Home.

It had a NIC card in it but since he will be using dialup I am trying to install a modem.

I have tried 3 different modems and WinXP does not see any of them and when I go through "Add New Hardware" it does not see new hardware and when I try to manually install and install drivers, it still does not work.

I'm trying to install HSP56 Micro-Modem (PCTEL) modem

Any suggestions?

I had a problem a while back where I could not get a Compaq computer to recognise PCI or ISA modems.I gave up and sold it with no modem in it. Also had a problem a while back where I could not get a ASUS P2B board to recognise a certain PCI graphics card (which worked fine in another computer).
I did establish that not all PCI cards sockets are compatible as some PCI slots only supply 5 volts power and some supply 5v & 3.3v power. (perhaps some only provide 3.3v, not sure).
Some cards only accept one voltage, not both. This should be determined but the number and position of notches in the contact strip on the card - BUT some card makers have not conformed to the 'rules' on that so that identification can not be relied upon 100%.
If you get Sandra (free) from www.sisoftware.co.uk it can tell you the voltage of your PCI slots (in mainboard information).
So, I do not have a definite answer for you but You should be warned that PCI cards and PCI slots are not all as compatible as I previously thought

Many "win" modems, which is what you have (HSP in the model) you must install the software/ driver BEFORE you install the hardware.

I bought a controller modem and all is well.

It's been so long since I messed around w/ modems I forgot about the perils of "win" modems.

Thanks for the posts.
