I am currently working on a laptop with windows 2000 and a usb port cable modem. I have brought home my old PC and have been trying to install this cable modem onto the PC. I can get it to install the disc for the cable modem and shows it as a network adapter, but will not detect the modem when I try to install and setup the modem. As far as I know the ports are set up fine, but not sure, I am kinda lost. Help.

Old PC is running Windows 2000, not sure how old it is it's a IBM thinkpad A20m. Modem does have Cat5 connection.
I tried getting online help from my cable company about it and they said I have to register the modem with them, but it's already registered on the old pc, I just want to install it on the new pc.

catboxhoney, some internet providers might register your computer's MAC address (as opposed to the modem's MAC address). That's why routers have a "clone MAC" feature, so that they can pretend to be the computer that you registered with the internet provider. Internet providers do this so that if you want to put more than one computer online, you'll have to buy another IP address. (my first cable company required this, my current cable company uses the modem's MAC address so I can swap as needed)
Once you have it installed as a network adapter, you should be able to use the modem. However, you might need to set some TCP/IP settings, such as the DHCP server, DNS server, etc. You might have an IP already, for example, but without DNS servers, you won't be able to look up websites and connect to them.
