I'm sure you could build one if you wanted to, but you can get a 56k external serial port modem for about $5-10 so why bother?

Do a google search....

Forget it if you don't intend to write software for the modem you want to build. Without software the modem will not be able to do anything. Software is what make the modem communicate with Windows and the ISP.

Pretty much every piece of hardware connected to a computer requires some instructions on how to inface with the rest. These are usually in the form of drivers.

Use searches for linux or unix and serial support.

For example,
"Model 3049CF - PC V.92 56K Modem
Includes Serial cable, includes Windows communications and fax software. The Model 3049CF is RoHS Lead free compliant.

The Zoom/Modem V.92 External Model 3049CF is a high performance 56K fax modem that plugs into the serial port of a computer using Windows, Macintosh, LINUX or UNIX operating systems. It also works with any device that can provide RS-232 signaling for Transmit, Receive, Ground. The 3049CF is ideal for use with point-of-sale devices and dumb terminals which do not provide DTE signaling. Robust power handling features including protection against brownouts and power glitches make this modem suitable for unattended remote applications.
"
See also linux docs and beos docs. All require a "hard" modem.

Any modern OS can access a hard modem if it supports a standard hayes set of commands.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.

I used the zoom 2948L for years, don,t think I ever tried a distro that didn't pick it up.
Same would be true of the external US robotics one I had.

if you get one on ebay, make sure the ac adaptor is included, somtimes they are not.
The serial cable would be nice to.
