My problem is two pronged, it concerns a Realtek soundcard and a 56k internal modem: Awhile ago I had an odd problem where I rebooted and my computer no longer detected my modem. Fearing a problem with the driver I used Acer's embedded restore program which did not work. I then reformatted my drive back to factory standards. After doing so, my modem still was not detected.
Sometime over the next two days of screwing with it (without actually opening the laptop) my modem was once again detected and all was well. Days later it happened again, this time the problem was fixed by installing a windows update. A day or so later, it again happened. I became irritated and purchased a Dynex 56k v92 external modem to ease my frustrations. The external modem works quite well (obviously) but immediately following the installation of the modem I lost all sound.
When I view the Sounds option within the XP control panel it states that no device is found. My default playback and recorder appears to be something connected with my modem software (Modem #0 Line playback) I once again reformatted the drive and afterwards found that I still had no internal modem, or sound despite the fact that external modem was not installed.
I'm at a complete loss. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Im confused. you say under control panel - sound "no device is found" yet you have defaults for the playback and record selections.
Compaq Presario SR1720NX Desktop Computer
AT&T SBC Yahoo DSL Home
Linksys Router/2 computers
Under "Sounds and Audio Devices" in the control panel, the default pop up displays: "No device found" under the volume tab. The volume bar under that cannot be moved, either. Upon clicking the audio tab, it says that the default device for sound playback is Modem #0 Line Playback. This was installed with my external modem, I recall it popping up during installation.
I'm still struggling with this. I've attempted another system restore, with no luck.
