I'm thinking about replacing my mobo because my PC goes on but there is no display, does anyone know if I have to buy this $160 mobo from e machines or can I replace with a cheaper one with no problems. I have read that I wont be able to use my restore disks if its not the original FIC AM37 MOBO from emachines, any comments greatly apreciated!

What makes you think it's the motherboard? It could be the power supply, CPU, video card, monitor, etc. Always troubleshoot before buying any parts, never assume...

Still doesn't mean it's motherboard, but most likely. Do you hear any beeps on startup? Can you get an other (old) videocard to check if it's not that?

What caused the PSU to go out? It's not unusual for a blown PSU to take other components out along with it when it blows...could be the board, could be the CPU. But you somehow have to troubleshoot your hardware so that you don't needlessly replace parts that are still good.

Where did you get the PSU...is it an eMachine replacement? I'm not sure if eMachines PSUs are proprietary or not, but if they are, you can't just install an "off the shelf" unit. It could also be that the PSU you installed is cheap crap & doesn't put out enough amperage to fire up the system. How much did you pay for it?

I've replaced a few emachines boards with their standardized counterpart. The latest was an intel 845 microatx mobo, however, i've also replaced the PSU too. This last time, I bought an OEM refurb for 30 at new egg.

What I would recommend is that you replace your system with a standardized board with the same chipset.

Les,

I'm not sure if the restore discs will work, since the BIOS is different. In every situation I did the switch, I used a board that was a chipset match with the proprietary board, in that effect, only a limited number of drivers had to be changed and most importantly the motherboard drivers

In each instance, the transition worked without the need to run a restore. In other instances whereby an entirely different board with completely different chipsets, I have found it best to reinstall windows. i.e.- intel 845 chipset from emachines with onboard intel graphics, with an intel 845 chipset mobo w/ intel graphics.
