I am in the process of replacing my mobo, cpu & ram on my computer. Fitted everything together ok, juggled the cables around (always seem to short!) but then I came to the front panel connectors ie hdled, power led, power switch, reset switch etc.

Now I know exactly where they go on my old board, an Asus A7A266-E as I took photos and they are labeled up, but my new mobo , an ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 has a different setup. (Less pins, different layout)

All it does when I turn the plug on is it lets out a high pitch noise, the fans start to turn then stops and thats it. This is with the front panel connectors connected & disconnected.

Any ideas? Not my power supply struggling is it?

Wow, that's odd since without the power switch connected, pushing the power switch will do nothing. Since you state that you know where the pins go on your old mobo, but don't state that for your new mobo I am assuming that you are just guessing? You need to find the correct pin-outs in the manual (go to the manufacturer's website if you don't hae one). You should just need the power switch connected in order to bot the system. Try just that one, then add the others one at a time.

Personally, I think the front panel connectors is one of the most difficult thing in putting a system together these days. I wish someone would come up with a standard so that the front panel connectors terminated into a single block that would fit onto the mobo.

What I mean is as soon as I turn the plug on at the wall, not the power switch on the front panel.
