Comment:

just bought & fitted 1GB pc3200 DDR400 ram
my pc keeps shutting down. so i removed all ram & just used the new 1GB everything seems ok
but when i add the other 2 banks 512mb each totaling 2GB pc keeps rebooting
but when i remove the new 1 GB ram & use my original 2 512mb banks everything seems ok
so my question eventually is
can i have 3 banks of RAM
1GB & 2 512mb running together by the look of things i can't & can anybody tell me what the problem may be.
Thanx

Incompatibility possibly. Unfortuntely, this is not an unimaginable issue & there isn't anything you can do about it if that is indeed the problem.

Aside from size, are the modules same speed & are they from the same manufacturer?

How many slots are available?
Only 3 or are there 4?

(just a thought (if 4))

Same speed, CAS, Density etcetc many reasons for incompatibility, best to read the MoBo Manual to see what it advises regarding memory.......

Many nForce2 MBoards would not run the RAM at 400 if all slots are filled. Consult your manual concerning this issue. In the meantime enter the BIOS and try setting the RAM at 333 and see what happens.

To add to the above, check your manual or the board manufacturer's website. There is sometimes a limit on the number of banks...if all your RAM sticks are double-sided, that may be the problem. Have you tried the 1GB & one 512MB together?

i should've checked the mobo manual first(Asus A7V600-X)
although i have 3 banks
it's recommended maximum only 2 be used?
why have 3 banks, i don't know,
so i am using the 1Gb & a 512mb & everything seems fine
Thanx again for the help.

i had asus a7v8x. it had 3 ram slots. it said if using pc2100/266mhz ram then can use all 3, if using pc2700/333mhz can only use 2, and if using pc3200/400mhz can only use ONE slot. mad or what? I still have the handbook with that in it. I only ever used 2 sticks of pc2700

Save yourself a lot of trouble. Go to www.crucial.com and find exactly the type of RAM and how much your system will handle.
