I attached a slave HDD to my machine and it shows as detected in BIOS, but I only get Drive C in My Computer when I boot up. The only thing I want to do is copy some personal files off the slave. Can I use "run" to access the slave, but without a drive letter, how do I do it?

Does Disk Management see the drive? How is it physically connected? It is properly jumpered? What is the file system of your OS partition, and what is the file system of the slave drive?

Sounds like the C master drive is FAT32. It should always be NTFS when useing NT OS'S. By NT i mean all NT 2K XP and Vista. The slave is probaly already NTFS.

Using FAT32 or NTFS on the boot drive when using WinXP makes no difference.

As jennifer mentioned you need to look for the drive in Disk Management. You may need to take ownership of the files/folders. Learn how to do that from the link below.

Sky42, is that the XP Pro machine that you are installing the drive on? A NTFS drive will not be recognized on a Win9X system.

Aegis - my mistake! It is a windows ME machine but I was told the O.S. would make no diff. If you're correct, and I suspect you are, that may be why the slave HDD with XP Pro on it isn't being recognized. Let me try this on my XP machine and see if it works! Thanx.

OK, that makes sense then. You didn't state you were connecting the drive to a different computer than the one listed above.

Sorry Jen - I was so eager to try Aegis' suggestion I totally overlooked the other posters. Yes, sys mgmt did recognize the slave, it was connected with a dual master/slave IDE cable, it was jumpered for slave, the master's partion was FAT32 and the slave's was NTFS. And Aegis was correct - the Fat32 did not recognize the NTFS partiton. So I connected the slave to an XP machine and as soon as the desktop appeared I got a "found new hardware" message. Went to my computer and there is was: "Drive F'! Anyway, all went well after that, so I thank everyone for their inputs.
